Looking at Zion

A year long documentary project looking at Mormon history and Culture in Utah.
Margeurite Dreissen for the NYT.
A couple weeks ago I got an email from an editor at the NYT with “got a Mormon story for you” in the subject line. After working on this project for a little while now, I’m starting to get the reputation as “the guy who photographs Mormons” and I am perfectly fine with that. Assignments that line up with my personal work are my absolute favorite. They offer me access to people and places I may have overlooked and help push the project forward. This particular story was about black Mormons and the changing political and cultural landscape within the LDS church. It is a very well done article and was on the front page of the website for a while yesterday.
I had a great time photographing and talking (mostly talking) with Margeurite. She is a standford educated Lawyer who now teaches at BYU. She lives in a suburb of Provo and she totally blew my mind when it came to her political beliefs. She was very liberal and incredibly outspoken despite living in the most conservative part of the state. We had a very candid conversation about what it was like to live in what is potentially the whitest place in the entire U.S. I definitely suggest reading the article. It is very interesting.
I shot some film on this assignment but unfortunately i’m too swamped right now to get my scan on.

Mark Niehart for my Jack Mormon series. Mark is my best friend Nick’s dad and probably one of the funniest people I know. He has an incredible story about how he ultimately decided to not become Mormon but I will let him tell it in his own words at some point.

blessings-and-honour asked: Hi there, I was wondering if you could please answer a few questions for me? At school I have to do a religious seminar on Mormonism and how Mormons find meaning in their lives. I was wondering if you could please try to answer these question for me if you have the time: "What happens after death?" "How can we obtain eternal life?" "How does the hope of eternal life give meaning to a Mormons life?" Thanks and God bless!

Hey, I’m not Mormon. I am just doing a documentary project on Mormon culture. So, I’m probably not the best person to answer this question. I’d find an actual Mormon. Good luck!

A banner seen on the back of a truck during LDS General Conference. For many single LDS people who don’t live in Utah (where there are a plethora of dating options), General Conference is THE time to meet other singles.

**I seriously debated whether or not to post this on the internet being that somebody’s actual phone number is in the shot but I figure that if she was willing to drive around downtown Salt Lake City with it in the open, it’s ok.

I will say that I did enjoy hitting this guy in the face with my flash on full power. Oops…
